The management of laying hens is changing rapidly around the world. In many countries hens can no longer be housed in conventional cages but are instead housed in enriched or colony cages, and increasingly in cage-free systems. The challenges posed by each system vary greatly and there is still a need to solve welfare problems in every type of housing. The talk will provide an overview of data on bird mortality, feather cover, smothering and bone condition and will summarise the likely experiences of commercial hens kept in cage or cage-free environments. New research approaches are being applied to address the most important welfare problems, including developments in bird rearing for hens housed in cage-free systems. Ongoing theoretical research work continues to develop more valid indicators of bird welfare. The talk will conclude by arguing that there is real momentum in the shift to cage-free systems and that on-farm recording systems need to be developed and employed in a way that provides transparency and reassurance to consumers.

Encountering complications when performing extractions is a reality of everyday practice.  Terrible periodontal disease, fractured teeth and tooth resorptions can readily be found in the mouths of many of our patients.  Performing oral surgery is both a blessing an a course- we get away with performing far-from-sterile procedures which usually heal under circumstances that wouldn't be possible in other areas of the body.  It is the blood supply that not only works in our favor for healing, but can dramatically work against us during surgery.  During this session we will discuss how modifications to your dental operatory can improve our extraction outcomes and surgical experience.  We will also discuss fundamental principles that will allow us to approach each extraction with strategies that will help improve patient outcomes by getting teeth out safely with flaps that heal predictably.
